“The Last Judgment” of Maxim Kantor: Exhibition and International Conference

With the acquisition of Maxim Kantor’s Last Judgment, his monumental work completes two pieces already existing in the Fine Arts collection of the Musée National d’Histoire et d’Art in Luxembourg.

In this context, the Luxembourg School of Religion & Society, the University of Luxembourg and the Musée National d’Histoire et d’Art had organised an international conference from 28 to 30 June in the presence of the artist and his work at the Saint-Michael’s Church in Luxembourg-City.

Academics from Belgium, Germany, the United Kingdom, Italy and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg approached the painting from the perspective of the philosopher, art historian, political scientist, theologian and literary scholar. Artist Maxim Kantor presented his own work (Friday, June 28) of which he says: “Representing the subject ‘the Last Judgment’ by a family portrait, I wanted to express some very important thought: Judgment is constant – it happens endlessly; each day, you face eternity and moral judgment; in your own inner eyes you are judged each second. To feel, to experience any concrete day as ‘the Last Judgment’ is something that may challenge our usual understanding of daily life.” The musical supervision of the evening was provided by the ensemble almondo.

On Sunday, June 30, the work has been presented in Italian. This presentation was accompanied by Alain Wirth at the organ of Saint-Michael’s Church. The homily of the 11:00 Mass created the relationship between liturgy and art, and the Saint-Michel Choir performed works related to the latter ends.
