The Intimacy of Judgment

Maxim Kantor’s The Last Judgment has deep roots and antecedents not only in its subject matter (authentically re-cast in a more intimate, familial perspective), but also in the fusion of European art styles – Gothic centrality is transformed into a Christian symbolism at once more dissipated and diffuse in a Burgundian style. Gothic paintings’ central motif is transformed and complexified, made more personal as the central mystery of the subject is paradoxically revealed in intimate relations. Kantor accomplishes the embodiment of the divine economy and purpose in real relations in this painting – in matter and history. In this sense Kantor’s The Last Judgment is best approached as an articulation of the incarnation, and exposes the true significance of The Last Judgment.

L’intimité du Jugement

Le Jugement dernier de Maxim Kantor a des racines profondes et des antécédents non seulement dans son sujet religieux (authentiquement refondu dans une perspective plus intime et familiale), mais aussi dans la fusion des styles artistiques européens – la centralité gothique se transforme en une symbolique chrétienne à la fois plus dispersée et diffuse dans un style bourguignon. Le motif central de la peinture gothique se transforme et se complexifie, se personnalise, le mystère central du sujet se révèle paradoxalement dans les relations intimes. Kantor réalise l’incarnation de l’économie et du destin divins dans les relations réelles de cette peinture – dans la matière et dans l’histoire. En ce sens, le Jugement dernier de Kantor est idéalement abordé comme une articulation de l’incarnation, et expose la véritable signification du Jugement dernier.
