Twenty-first century religion: European and global perspectives
Lecture and dialogue for practitioners working in different religious communities
The Luxembourg School of Religion & Society, in cooperation with the Anglican Church of Luxembourg and the “Conseil des cultes conventionnés” were pleased to invite you to a lecture and a dialogue with Prof. Grace Davie.
Monday 13 May 2019, 14h00-16h00
Luxembourg School of Religion & Society
Centre Jean XXIII, 52, rue Jules Wilhelm
L-2728 Luxembourg
This seminar will outline the religious landscape in modern Europe, seeing this as an “exception” in global terms. Different factors push and pull in different directions: some point to increasing secularization; others resist this trend.
What emerges is a paradox: on the one hand European populations are less religiously active than they used to be; on the other they talk more about religion than they did in the past. One reason for the latter is the persistence of religion in almost every other global region and the impact that this has on public debate in Europe.
Grace Davie is professor emeritus in the Sociology of Religion at the University of Exeter UK and a senior adviser to the Impact of Religion Research Programme at Uppsala University. She is a past president of the American Association for the Sociology of Religion (2003) and of the Research Committee 22 (Sociology of Religion) of the International Sociological Association (2002-2006).
In 2000-2001 she was the Kerstin-Hesselgren Professor at Uppsala, where she returned for extended visits in 2006-2007, 2010 and 2012, receiving an honorary degree in 2008. She has also held visiting appointments at the École Pratique des Hautes Études (1996) and at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (1998 and 2003), both in Paris. She is a member of the Academia Europe.
